Skills to Support Young Children with Special Needs

Professional Development and Parent Education

Educational Productions brings you training videos that show and teach strategies to support young children with special needs from birth to 8 years. You will see adults working in child care, pre-K, Head Start and K-2 classrooms where typically and non-typically developing children are learning together.

The videos listed below are especially helpful for supporting children with atypical development because they teach adults to be good observers of what a child is doing at a particular moment in a particular context instead of what is expected at a particular age or stage. These videos are also widely used for parent education. Many are available in both English and Spanish.

First Steps series
Supporting early language development

(in English or Spanish) Birth to three years

Four videos widely used in early intervention efforts for training staff and parents. These videos teach how to support language acquisition and model responsive, connected adult-child relationships that are the foundation for all development and learning.

Hand-in-Hand series
Individualized teaching strategies to help every child succeed

Three to eight years

Seven videos show how to intentionally support cognitive, language and social-emotional development in a play-based learning environment. Helps increase observation skills and models how to intervene with children who are missing out on learning.

The Power of Positive Communication
Increase children's understanding, reduce discipline problems

Three to eight years

A complete three-session training teaches how and why to use clear, positive language to help children to follow expectations and learn. Emphasizes strategies that assist both children with special needs and English language learners. CD-ROM teaches through video rich modeling, interactive exercises, reflection questions and action plans.
